Dispatch from Guaymas

San Carlos, Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico

Went horseback riding with Astrid, the accountant-turned-ranchera, born in Geneva, resident of San Carlos for eleven years. Horseback riding was an amazing experience, as all experiences here so far have been. There were flowers in the desert, an old movie set built for Catch-22, and stories about the construction of the place.

The bedbug bites on my legs have become large, angry welts. I suppose I am not yet accustomed to the Mexican strain of the bugs yet, hence the reaction. I am loathe to remedy it with pills. Let my body suffer and adapt.

Thomas’ mood is off today and I wonder how much of it has to do with me. I have noticed myself being abrasive about his quest for an authentic Mexican experience.

Another lesson that I feel more distinctly because I am here: be nurturing to people’s hopes.
