at the shore

We tried to stop
the tides with our stares

thinking our will could
send the water back
empty-handed, no sand
stolen from the shore.

Of course, eventually
the land melted away
in cloudy sparkling waves

but you remain–the rock
I stand on as the sea
takes everything else.
