U is for Uproot

Why should we be so afraid to uproot ourselves? Afraid of losing touch with familiar earth, worried that we will not find suitable soil, forgetful that we are incredibly adaptable beings.

When trees are dug up to be replanted, as much of their rootbulb is kept intact as possible, dirt and all. The clod of dirt and roots is wrapped in burlap, tucked together safely until it is put in the ground again. The roots have a chance to acclimate to the new ground because they have their past dirt still surrounding their roots.

No matter how far we might go, no matter how alone we might feel, we can be like the trees. We carry our earth, our friends, our lovers, our families, with us wherever we go. They will always be a part of us, no matter where we make our home.

I want to be more like the trees.
