in the aftermath

so the land has been destroyed
by our hands the land has been destroyed
by our greed the land has been destroyed
by our carelessness the land has been destroyed
by our foolishness the land has been destroyed
by our arrogance the land has been destroyed

the cherry trees in Fukushima sit lonely now
the rice paddies will go unplanted
while young, old, and elderly are all uprooted
there is no question of bodily strength or weakness
when faced with poison that will seep into
every cell, every pore
the only choice is to run and to hope
that the poison will not catch up

who placed the power plants there? who
said that atoms should be split there?
who decided that power was more
important than purity? who decided
what was important and what was real
and what was necessary and what
amount of risk could be taken and
how much damage was negligible
and what amount of time it would take
for recovery and how many lives would
be affected and how many would be
expendable?

so many unanswerable questions swirl
while one truth stands:
we must change.
