in phnom penh

i’m retreating into the old habits
i have always had in a family home

spending hours inside worlds inside books
inside a room with the door closed
inside a mind planning for the time
when i will be someplace else…

how precious few
are those moments
when exactly where we are
is exactly where we
want and need to be
and our minds are there, too.

my mind is in california,
thinking of a homecoming scene
that will not happen, all the
joyous work that must be done,

coastal highways and cameras
and night clubs and coffee shops
and walls of volcanic rock…

oh, los angeles,
your tendrils reach so far
