blog generation

the poet
spills words
messily
into
the abyss
that is
the internet

what would
dickinson
or lorde
or neruda
have written
had the
blog
existed
when they
were drafting
their first
poems?

cyberspace
is filled with
references
to the beat
generation

and i, a member of
the blog generation,
romanticize them
their presence
foolishness
performed
in unison

i am so accustomed
casting words haphazardly
into the tangle of
satellites and wires
flowing from my
fingertips into the
sky, into the screens
of whomever else
may also
be stumbling around
the web

and yet
i can also sit
in a room of faces
with the intention
of nurturing our
writing
and share
almost nothing

how frightening
such nudity
in the flesh can be

and also be
exactly
what i need

no one
ever promised
that writing poetry
would not be
scary
or even
that it shouldn’t be

so perhaps
it is time to trust
nonstrangers
a bit more
and maybe
write
a little bit
less messily
